Prior To The Outing
I purchased some Power Pro 20# and 65# for our 3 rods, removed the Trilene monofilament we've had on these spools, then spooled up the two smaller poles with PP 20lb, and the slightly bigger pole with PP 65lb.  I have never used anything but mono.  After trying the Power Pro, I am amazed at the ability to cast more than twice as far...

We will put this new line to the test Father's Day weekend.

The Outing
Today's participants would be us & Carlos & Pipi.  We left land only to get 10 minutes out and realize that we forgot the life jackets.  20 minutes later at 8:30am we left land again.

First stop is for bait between Picnic & the Sanibel Causeway.  What a difference from last week.  The bait was scarce.  We could not arouse much bait at all.  We were able to catch one very large shiner.  Disappointed, we stopped at the Punta Rassa bait shop and got 2 dozen shrimp.

Next stop is Sanibel Causeway Span C for some 20 ft fishing.  A couple other boats were anchored there, and we saw a guy pulling in something but he lost it.  No luck for us.

So we headed for the same place we were at last week - York Island area.  We worked this area and I caught a Leatherjack.  That is a first for me.  Here's Amber holding it:

A while later, Karla hooks onto something but I could tell from the pull-pull-pull of her rod that it was a Cockroach Of The Sea.  Click here for the video.  There were many more of these unfortunate catches.

We did have some perks though.  As we drifted over the flats, I put out some homemade chum and after a while the bait was churning all around us!  I put my newfound cast net skills to work and it paid off!  We got lots of bait and hope was present once again.

MIX OF BAITFISH CAUGHT
greenbacks 30%
shiners 65%
pinfish 5%
other 0%

The rest of the day brought us a few more cats and and ungodly storm in the early evening.  We found ourselves docked once again at the same resident's dock in  St. James City.  Lightning was striking within half mile of us.  After 15 minutes with no letup in sight, we decided to face the fact that we need to get home.  We ventured out into the pouring rain and rough seas of Southern Pine Island Sound and headed for Picnic Island.  Visibility was low.  Seas were rough, and lightning was bad.  Once we got to the miserable mile at Picnic Island the water was smooth as glass yet it were still in a heavy downpour.  It didn't let up until Shell Point at the mouth of the river.

Soaked, we made it to land about 8:15pm with nothing to show for except a well full of bait.

But, it was an adventure, that is for sure, and I guess that is all that counts.
