CLICK ON THE PICS for full size ones
Saturday, July 15, 2006
We left the dock about 10:30am and headed to the Sanibel Causeway to find bait.
There was a large animal on the beach. From our distance, it was difficult to see, but appeared to be a manatee:

There were many dead fish on the bayside of the causeways:

After quite a bit of moving around, and patience, we scored about 25 pieces.

Then we headed towards Matlacha Pass, a place we have never been in the boat. The channel was narrow and shallow, and the whole area just didn't seem promising so with plans of going a mile or so out off of the lighthouse, we turned around. We headed through span C and spotted this little guy:

2:40pm
We stopped at the lighthouse for a restroom break and found many dead smelly fish washed up on shore. Amber saw a goliath grouper on the shore also.
We got about a mile or so off the lighthouse and discovered this monster:

3:21pm
It appears to be a tarpon. It was about 4-5 feet in length.
We fished this edge of the gulf for hours with no catches. With hope nearly exhausted, we motored to a well known place just off of Fort Myers Beach, and it is a good thing we did, because hope was once again renewed! Karla made the debut catch of the day with a very nice Spanish Mackeral!:

I tried to have her hold the mack but she wouldn't and got increasingly frustrated with me trying to get her to hold it! She was worried about getting bitten, lol.
Amber began fishing after her mom caught the mack. She soon fell asleep rod and reel in hand:

Then he caught a few more - 3 macks in all and he lost several.
I caught one too:

We were all yipping and hollering for an hour or so having a great time catching keeper fish after fish. Karla had several line breaks. It was a blast. Hope is once again renewed!
Another great Florida Sunset:
