"Nothing much expected; nothing much to show for."

This is the first time we have been out fishing on the boat since August.  It was good to get out, although slightly chilly while underway eventhough this winter seems to be the warmest I have seen in many years here in SW Florida.

Guests on board were a family of 4 including Alec & Anna, and their children Fielding and Deja.  So that made 7 of us.

We left land about 9:45am with 2 dozen store bought shrimp, and we headed toward the Sanibel Causeway bayside flats area in search of bait.  It was just a bit more than breezy but not "windy".  Here and there were birds and pelicans diving, and we saw very small baits such as minnows, but nothing of significance.  We then headed toward and around Picnic Island.  On the west side of the island there were several boats cast netting.  So we decided to give it a try.  Alec was able to pull in one very large shiner and a smaller one.  But again after a brief few minutes chumming the area we were not able to arouse any more.  It is unclear whether the fishermen in the area were catching bait or not.

We went on to the cut between York Island and St. James City and drifted.  I caught about an 8 inch "lizard fish" early on.  There were several hookups in this area but all lost before discovery of what they were.

We moved on to the west side of York Island, anchored, and fished the flats area, east of the channel.  After some time we moved on toward Chino Island.  On the north side we noticed lots of seagulls and pelicans diving for bait, but once again we were unable to catch any.  We anchored on the east side cut at Chino Island.  Alec caught a seagull, yes A SEAGULL several times with the large shiner bait fish he had caught earlier.  He would cast, and the seagull would appear seemingly from nowhere and would get the bait, and fly away with it until it was yanked from it's beak.

After some time we headed all the way back to Punta Rassa for a rest break.

Then we anchored and fished near the Sanibel Causeway Span A pilings close to the PR ramp.  It seemed my bait was getting eaten over and over but it may just have been the shelly/rocky bottom and the current giving me the impression that I was getting nibbles.

Finally we headed to Picnic Island some afternoon sun and fun.

We made it back home about 5pm with a few shrimp and a baitfish in the well.  There was very little action today but that was to be expected since it is January and slightly chilly.
