"Slow start but some surprises near the end."

Today almost didn't happen because Amber has had a very sore throat for a few days now.  We would have left around daybreak but didn't for this reason.  However, as time wore on, Karla really wanted to go fishing, even if we didn't venture too far.  Amber was doing better so the trip was on!  We left ground at 12:40pm with only 4 shiners and a lizard fish left over from last week's catch.  Oh yeah, and a new 8 foot cast net I was eager to try.

We headed to the bayside between Span A and Span B and even after chumming for a while there was no sign of bait.  There was a gentleman flying around us on an interesting personal flying machine, and as he passed over us Amber waved and he waved back.

We headed under Span B where the pelicans were diving, fished and threw the net a few times but nothing.  Then we headed to the other side of Span B and anchored for a while.

There were a few other boats on this side but quite a ways off from us, and after some time we heard some hollering from one of the boats, a boat with a red hull.  I kept my eyes fixed on the lady who seemed to have something on her line.  After about 5 minutes of watching, I saw near the bow of their boat a tarpon jump straight out of the water, shake its head, and disappear.  That is a first for me.

A while later Karla hooked up on something and wow after seeing that tarpon you know what we had on our minds!  What she had took her around the boat a couple of times and with the bimini top up that was a bit of a challenge!  After 5-10 minute struggle, Karla breathing heavy, and numerous almost U-turn like pole formations (Rhino Indestructible pole), she surfaced this:

(Be patient. It will take 30-60 seconds to buffer.)

Shortly after Amber picked up this fighter:

A bit discouraged from not being able to find bait, and now critically low on bait, the day was going well.  It started to sprinkle too.  It remained sprinkling for the remainder of the day.  The tail of the fish in the above picture became bait for hopefully something bigger.   But nothing was to come of its use.

After a while, we headed to the flats area just off of Span A toward FMB in search of bait.  Well rather quickly we found pelicans diving an area.  We came upon the area and I launched about 4 blind throws bringing back in excess of 50 shiners.  Great!!!  The new net works and we have bait!

We headed toward the light house and fished for a short time before the wind picked up dramatically, and it became very annoying because the surf was kicking up.  We headed back toward Span A in search for calmer waters.

Karla wanted to explore some new territory so we did just that.  Good thing too because I got some surprises:

A nice 17.5" spotted sea trout which surfaced and fought like a ladyfish.  Then this:

And a second crevalle jack after that one!  Boy theses biggins were strong and wanted to stay on the bottom.  The jack shown is possibly the biggest fish I have ever caught.

So a slow day turned good!

We got back on land about 10:25pm.  There are no times on these pictures because my camera continues to malfunction after being doused by saltwater a few times.
