Memorial Day Weekend May 26 & 27, 2007
"Slow fishing again but went somewhere new and got a little bit of a rush."

Saturday, May 26, 2007

Tonight we took a quick run to the Cape Coral Bridge about 9:00pm and used pinfish from the canal bait pen, and cut frozen Spanish Mack.  But other than catfish, we didn't strike it big.  The wind out of the east was tough, and that coupled with the incoming tide proved to be a tough time for fishing.  Returned to land around midnight.  Bait pinfish are very robust; they last week to week in the canal bait pen.

Today we left land about 2:40pm and headed toward Shell Point in search of new fishing grounds.  We quickly found some depth and significant flow in this area on the outgoing.  Tried to anchor but no way - bottom was too shelly.  We got tangled up in the mangroves bad once.  Almost lost a couple of poles and a bimini top.

We managed to anchor further down and fished for several hours in the strong flow but still was not able to catch a thing.  There were several birds like this and they would dive-bomb apparent bait passing by (we never saw any bait).

On the way out of Shell Point we had another brief crisis when we went too shallow and the current was dragging us shallower.  But Karla & I both jumped out, and I was able to push the boat deeper (Oh, now I remember why my back is killing me this Tuesday afternoon as I write this report!).

Later we came out of Shell Point near Span A and after much patience, I was able to catch this little spotted Sea Trout:

After dark we headed back in to Shell Point and caught a few catfish.  Later we sat in the channel west of Shell Point and I hooked onto something that felt enormous with my "big rig pole", and after 7-8 minutes of working it my 80lb leader snapped at the 10/0 J hook knot.  It felt like a ginormous manta ray because it wanted to stay at the bottom like a suction cup on a glass floor, and now I remember once again why I go fishing:  THE RUSH WAS GREAT!

We arrived back home about 2:00am or so.
