"  What a surprise!  "

I've been really "itchin' to go fishin' lately.  On Friday, Amber and I went to a South Ft. Myers beach and caught some bait.  We ended up with about 7 nice 4-6 inch mullet.  I kept those in the canal bait pen until today.

Since Karla worked today, it would be a short trip out to the river for a little while.  And although I had a throbbing headache since I awoke today, I was still delighted to get out on the water finally.  On board was Amber, Spike, and myself.  We left land at 3:30pm and headed a short distance into the river.  I used my "big boy pole" which has 50lb mono line to 80lb mono leader to an Octopus 8/0 circle hook.  I put one mullet on that and after some time I felt a tug-tug-tug that felt much like a catfish.  I quickly realized that this was bigger than a catfish and I assumed it must be a ray.  Well no; much to my surprise I pulled a fatty out.

4:45pm

I'm pretty sure it is some sort of Grouper.  The girth on this thing was bigger than any fish I have ever caught.  It was a bit challenging getting the hook out.  Check this picture out:

Although visually displeasing, it is easy to appreciate.  Amber accidentally took this picture of the fish as she scrambled across the boat as I was positioning to unhook it.

I continued to fish with mullet but time and time again it seemed like the mullet were pulling my line around structure, and I broke my line several times trying to dislodge.

Finally, I hooked another sea creature and attempted to pull it up, but once again the line broke on structure.  Rats!
