Introduction

After Hurricane Charley on August 13, 2004, it was determined that we could have really benefited from storm shutters for peace-of-mind.  In July 2005, I purchased $1700 in aluminum storm panels.  I put them up in October in preparation for Hurricane Wilma.

The Structure

This structure to be protected is a single floor concrete block home with a solid concrete tie beam above the windows.  This structure was built in the 1970s.

Installation Considerations

  • The storm panels need to block projectiles and wind pressure from shattering the windows they protect.

  • The storm panels need to be adequately secured to the concrete block structure.

  • The storm panels need to be easy to put up & take down when future storms threaten.

  • The hardware that remains up after the storm needs to be minimally visually displeasing.

  • Cost cannot be unreasonable.

Special Tools

  • hammer drill (an absolute must for drilling through concrete.  Makes the concrete seem like hard cheese rather than concrete.
