Motorolla T6400 GMRS Radios Page
April 13, 2005
Believe it or not I am still using the 3 T6400s I
picked up a few years ago. In fact, I found one on clearance of Office
Max last week for $19! So now I have a fourth.
September 3, 2003
Last month before our trip, I decided to
solder my rechargeable batteries into these 3 T6400s we have. The
reason I did this was because on occasion, if these handhelds were
bumped or dropped, the batteries would become disconnected momentarily
and the unit would either display an error or shut off. In any
case, I did not want to risk not being able to communicate with family
when needed.
You may wonder how I charge
the batteries then. I have setup wires with alligator clips
connected to a charger. I clip the alligator clips on the + and -
of each T6400. Cumbersome? Yes. That is why I would
have like to have seen a charge jack on these T6400s. But the
charge lasts so long, that it really is not a big deal to have to charge
these this way once in a while.
Again, the range and clarity with
these units remain exceptional when compared to many other GMRS & FRS
radios I tried in 2002.

After trying many different types of 2 way FRS, GMRS, and FRS/GMRS radios, I
am extremely happy with the T6400s I purchased a few months ago. I am able to
keep in touch with family members in large department stores, including out
into the parking lot and beyond (into the street and down the road a bit).
Range: Not as labeled
I believe the range of most of these FRS and GMRS radios are measured by the
designers if they were standing on 2 mountain peaks - direct line of sight
with no obstructions. In the city on GMRS full power channels, with mostly 1
story buildings and lots of palm trees, I am lucky if I get 1.5 miles from
t6400 to t6400 before functionality is lost.
Clarity: Excellent
I AM EXTREMELY satisfied with the clarity (voice-scramble OFF, though) when
comparing these units to other GMRS and FRS radios I have tried. The voice
scramble feature inhibits clarity.
Batteries-Time: Excellent
Using 1800MaH Rayovac NiMHi batteries, these units will last well over 12
hours on a single charge, with lets say about 10 minutes of total transmit
time (transmit time is only an estimation).
Batteries-Charge: Poor
These units do NOT come with a charger. Also, the charger which comes with a
cradle and NiMHI batteries is about $35. It would have been more suitable as
well as cost effective, in my opinion, to build a charge jack right into the
radio.
Summary:
I recommend this radio because it has excellent clarity, and decent range,
although not near the full 5 miles whatsoever.
